Hulot arrives (inconveniencing a dog that wants to sleep in the road) and tries his best to be a well-behaved holiday-maker. He is so polite that when the announcer on the hotel's radio says “Good night, everybody!” he bows and doffs his hat. 2009-07-06 Monsieur Hulot [mə.sjø y.lo] is a character created and played by French comic Jacques Tati for a series of films in the 1950s and '60s, namely Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot (1953), Mon Oncle (1958), Playtime (1967) and Trafic (1971). Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot (French: Les Vacances de M. Hulot; released as Monsieur Hulot's Holiday in the US) is a 1953 French comedy film starring and directed by Jacques Tati.

Behind the camera, however, Tati was a meti… My first review here and felt compelled to add it after watching this movie. On the surface this is a charming faux-travel movie where the titular character drives through a series of whimsical scenes with recurring characters reminiscent of the famous Monsieur Hulot.

Jacques Tati's "Playtime" (1967) is a world of plate glass and steel, endless corridors, work stations, elevators and escaltors -- and Mr. Hulot (Tati), in his signature short pants, raincoat, hat and umbrella, who is seemingly on display behind glass walls in a modern office building. In Jacques Tati’s Trafic, the bumbling Monsieur Hulot, kitted out as always with tan raincoat, beaten brown hat, and umbrella, takes to Paris’s highways and byways. Mr. Hulot's Holiday (or Les Vacances de M. Hulot) is a 1953 French comedy film written by, directed by, and starring Jacques Tati. It's largely a light-hearted physical comedy that pokes fun at the way people act while on holiday at a seaside hotel, with various character types and minimal dialogue. There’s actually a surprising amount of similarity between Monsieur Hulot and the Cat in the Hat: each of them are chaos agents who entertain children by disrupting the polite orderliness of the adult suburban world. While the Cat’s well-meaning innocence always comes with a wink, Hulot seems to be the real deal.
